Architect: Thomas Saunders Partnership

Brief: To carry out, with the architect, a detailed assessment of the Trust’s existing storage and, in discussion with all parties, to analyze their needs for a new, purpose-built HQ building.

This meant understanding any problems or difficulties with the existing environment and sourcing suitable storage systems to serve their future needs.

We designed several new flexistor mobile shelving systems (matching the finishes to the décor and furnishings of the new building), as well as designing bespoke shelving for their post room, and library shelving for their reference library. The project began as an initial requirement for mobile she lving, and evolved to a single source for all their storage requirements.

Project: File Storage for new headquarters.

Client: Alexander Forbes Group Services.

Product: Deltastor shelving on Flexistor & Maxistor bases.

Material Stored: Files & file boxes.

Brief: To design mobile storage systems to accommodate a wide range of files, both loose and in boxed form, in a new HQ building—including relocation and integration of existing storage systems from the previous HQ building. Detailed file audits were undertaken to fully understand the client’s future needs, prior to the design of mobile systems. Compatibility with the new office furnishings, as well as ease of use for the staff, were important considerations for a flexible, accessible office space.

The use of our flexistor relocatable mobile system was important to pre-empt future departmental moves that might require the use of the storage elsewhere. In addition, heavy duty maxstor mobile units were installed in the basement areas for bulkier, less active archive storage, where an uneven concrete floor required a more robust solution.

A continuing relationship, including ongoing servicing and maintenance of the original facility, has led to additional work being undertaken, both in the UK and Ireland.

Project: Offsite Storage Facility.

Client: Ascent Media.

Product: Multistor racking Mezzstor floor Deltastor shelving & Maxstor bases.

Material Stored: Film & music tape formats.

Brief: To design a fully flexible offsite storage facility for a variety of film can and tape formats.

The storage location was a conventional warehouse, divided into two separate zones.

Zone 1: Low-activity film can storage of various weights and sizes:- This requirement was best served by our wides for racking product. Given the potential double height of the available space, we designed a two-tier system that will provide the flexibility of a mezzanine floor and reducing the cost by utilizing the widestor frames as the support structure for the walkways at the upper level.

Zone 2: High activity tape storage requiring a secure, environmentally-controlled vault:- An existing Compact Storage mobile shelving system was relocated and reconfigured to accommodate the growing large and small digital tape storage requirement.

Again, given the available headroom, we designed a mezzanine floor structure capable of taking additional mobile shelving as and when the ground floor installation reached capacity. The three storage elements to this project met all the design criteria, with the advantage of providing long-term storage capable of tracking Ascent Media’s continuing expansion.

Project: Film Tape Archive.

Client: Ascent Media.

Product: Deltastor shelving on Maxistor bases.

Material Stored: A variety of tape formats.

Brief: To enable the storage of up to 800,000 video tapes for a wide variety of clients.

The project involved part-building a new tape library to accommodate the existing capacity. Once this was completed, the client was able to move the existing video library to its new location, enabling Compact Storage to strip down the existing mobile shelving and mobile bases, reusing many of the components in the completion of the next phases of work.

Phases 3, 4 and 5 were built with consideration for the day-to-day operational needs of the client.

The completed installation has converted a rundown basement area of the building into a state-of-the-art tape library, located in Central London, servicing a multitude of TV studios on a daily basis.

This project was completed on time and within budget and continues a very successful relationship with the client, which is now in its 8th year.

Project: New Warehouse Facility.

Client: Commodities Centre.

Product: Narrow aisle Pallestor.

Material Stored: Foodstuffs.

Brief: Maximum capacity with 100% accessibility.

The client required a high density, fully accessible design to accommodate a wide range of stored items. The mix of storage changes on a regular basis, necessitating a fully-adjustable pallet racking system.

The specification of the forklift trucks was crucial to our design and they were carefully chosen by Compact Storage to ensure that every aspect of the client’s operation was successfully accommodated.

Taking time to understand our client’s needs has resulted in additional projects being undertaken and several referrals leading to further work.
