Demand for Warehouse Space and Roller Racking is on the Rise

This year has been like no other for e-commerce and the effects have certainly been felt across the warehousing industry. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many people have turned to online shopping to get their retail fix when we were unable to visit our high streets and other ‘non-essential’ shops.

The unstoppable rise of online shopping has led to a surge in demand for warehouse racking and storage, data has revealed.

Over 12 million square feet of logistics properties, typically used for storage and distribution, were let in Q1 and Q2 of 2020. Property agent JLL said the take-up figure was 38% higher than a year earlier and a 90% jump compared with Q3 and Q4 of 2019.

Online shopping rates continue to surge, growing 129% week-on-week in the UK and Europe, according to the latest Covid-19 and the Consumer Report from Astound Commerce.

Greater demand for online shopping is putting pressure on warehouse storage facilities. Distribution teams need to keep up with the growing demand for online goods, especially with Christmas just around the corner.
